My Story
Having being named after the Sabian brand of cymbals and growing up close to Sheffield, South Yorkshire (The BEST city of music), it was inevitable that music would become a huge part of my life. I taught myself to play keyboards, piano, and the bass guitar from a young age and always loved singing. Growing up in the early 2000's and being a part of the Kerrang TV generation, I was obsessed with bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Avril Lavigne, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Busted, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few. My parents music taste was not lost on me either, taking huge influence from acts like David Bowie, Duran Duran, Fleetwood Mac, The Cure, The Quireboys, Alice Cooper, Thunder, Nine Inch Nails and so many more. Perhaps to my parents distaste, I was (and still am) a massive fan of the pop scene of the day with artists like S Club 7, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Pink, Billie Piper, Kylie Minogue, Blue and Five on daily rotation.

After leaving school, I attended college to study music and around this time began attending lots of local gigs and even set up my own music review blog as well as venturing into a short lived bout of writing my own music. When I left college I wasn't sure how to turn music into a career, so ended up landing an office job in the construction industry, which gave me skills in administration, project management, data entry, customer service, quality control and social media management. Not to mention a wage that allowed me to go to as many concerts and festivals as I liked. At the age of just 16, I attended my first ever Download Festival and became hooked on the rock festival scene, but it wasn't until after covid restrictions were lifted in 2021 that I started attending the more grassroots style festivals such as Steelhouse, Ramblin' Man, Stonedead, Rockwich, and of course, Call of The Wild. It was at these such festivals that I made some amazing music industry connections, some of which I now call close friends, that inspired me to begin this journey.
After meeting radio hosts Charlie, Caz and Tina, I was inspired to start my own online radio show, "The Sabo Show", focusing on the rock festival circuit both locally and internationally, with classic tracks and new emerging artists. The show went on to regularly climb the Mixcloud top 10 chart and receieved great reviews. Radio had always been the soundtrack to my life, being in the pre-streaming era of music, and not to mention being an only child that wasn't really into gaming or films, the radio was a constant companion and I even briefly was a member of my school's radio station team. In 2022 I made connections with Upstaged Limited (Call of The Wild, Rockmantic, Trailblazer, and the now defunct Winter Rocks), and offered my assistance in social media content, creating advertising videos for their events. It was the first time I had fully considered pursuing music as a career, which was a scary but exciting prospect.

In the summer of 2024, while still working in construction, I applied to Waterbear College of Music, purely on a whim. They offered a different experience from traditional universities in that the course could be tailored to my career goals, and they would help me to pursue said career. I was offered a place on the Music Business (BA, Hons) course in September and with that I handed in my notice at the only proper job I'd had since I was 18 and jumped head first into all things music. Since completing my first year, the course has inspired me to turn Sabo Music Media into a business, supporting grassroots artists, events and promoters in content creation and social media management, as well as expanding my podcast, The Sabo Show and a return to writing reviews and articles.

I hope you'll follow and support me on this journey into a career in music! Watch this space and as always, KEEP IT SABO!
